Tables

The most important part of a table tennis table is the top. Generally, thicker tops are better because the ball bounces higher, the bounce is more uniform across the table, and the top will better resist warping. A strong frame and solid legs make for a better bounce. A strong frame also resists warping of the top. Note that the floor also has an effect on how a table plays: If you put any table on a thick carpet, it will be very slow. [more info]

Rackets

A racket is composed of a blade and rubber. You can purchase a manufacturer-assembled racket or you can create a custom racket by selecting the blade and rubber separately and then assembling them yourself or having us assemble them (see Racket Assembly). [more info]

Balls

Celluloid Balls—Celluloid has been the traditional material used for ping pong balls since the early 1900's. Celluloid balls are still widely used and are almost always significantly less expensive than non-celluloid balls. Poly Balls—In 2012, the ITTF, anticipating that celluloid production worldwide had declined dramatically, specified that starting 7/2014, balls used in ITTF events would be made of a material other than celluloid. These began to be referred to as poly or plastic balls. Today, nearly all sanctioned tournaments, even local ones, use poly balls. Poly balls tend to be more expensive than celluloid balls of equivalent quality. [more info]

Robots

Table tennis robots are machines that throw the ball to you so you can hit it back. Using a robot is not usually as much fun as hitting balls thrown by a person, nor is it as good as a good practice partner. However, a robot is always willing to play! [more info]

Shoes

Table tennis is played with your weight on the balls of your feet with lots of sideways movement and change of direction. As such, table tennis shoes are lighter than shoes for most other racket sports and are very good for moving laterally. The most important characteristics of a table tennis shoe are grip, being lightweight, and having a good snug fit. [more info]
